Standard Front Sight Puller Instructions
General
The Standard Front Sight Puller consists of the Yoke, Blocks (2), Bolts (2) and
Washer. The only purpose of the Washer is to enable the Puller to be stored as a
unit to avoid losing any of the parts. The Puller is designed to remove 1921, M1
and M1A1 Thompson ring-style front sights from barrels. Ring-style front sights
are held on the barrel by friction and, originally, with a pin.
Pin Removal
Determine which direction the pin was driven into the hole in the sight. This is
important because the driving of the pin will cause a slight mushrooming of the
driven end of the pin. The pin must be driven out of the hole from the other end
to avoid trying to force the enlarged end through the hole. Hold the barrel in a
bench vise just behind the sight using the Richardson Sight End Barrel Vise Jaws
with the driven end of the pin downward. Start the pin back out by using a nail
set which has a slight depression on its end. This prevents the nail set from
sliding off the pin. Once the pin has started to move, it can be completely
driven out with a pin punch.
Sight Removal
Completely disassemble the Puller. Reassemble the Blocks on the barrel behind
the sight making sure the cavity is toward the sight. Unscrew the Yoke so that
the swivel on the end of the screw is out of the way by being against the Yoke
frame. Center the Yoke over the end of the barrel. Rotate the blocks so that the
sight fits properly in the cavity. Fit the Blocks back into the slots on the
Yoke. Tighten the Yoke screw, pulling the Blocks and sight off the barrel.
