Receiver Vise And Grip Mount Retainer Instructions
General
The Receiver Vise consists of an aluminum Frame permanently fitted with 4 Studs,
an aluminum Spacer, 3 plastic Jaws, a steel clamp Block, 2 Nuts and 2 Bolts (for
attaching the Grip Mount Retainer if used). The receiver Vise is designed to
hold a Thompson receiver during barreling operations. It is to be held in a 6"
bench vise or can be drilled and bolted to a post or other support. It is
normally used with either the Richardson Grip Mount Retainer or Grip Mount Lever
and Heavy Duty or Universal Barrel Wrenches. Since the Grip Mount Retainer can
only be used in conjunction with the Receiver Vise, instructions for its use are
included here. The Grip Mount Retainer consists of a steel angle Bracket,
Clevis, Pin and Hand Nut.
Setup
For barrel removal, fit the Spacer over the right side Studs. Fit a Jaw, cut out
section up, over the Studs on each side of the Frame. If the Grip Mount Retainer
is to be used, bolt the Bracket to the Frame, with the Bracket extending beyond
the Frame on the right side and the vertical Bracket leg closest to the Jaws.
Fit the threaded shank of the Clevis through the hole on the vertical leg of the
Bracket from the Jaws side. Start the Hand Nut onto the threaded shank. Remove
the Pin from the Clevis. For barrel installation, substitute “left” for “right”
in the foregoing. This is for right-handed people so the wrenching is always
downward. Left-handed people can reverse sides.
Barrel Removal
Strip the receiver/barrel/grip mount assembly (the ejector, latch and oiler need
not be removed) from the gun. Place the receiver/barrel assembly into the Jaws,
barrel to the right, left side up, grip mount into the Clevis. Fit the remaining
Jaw, cut out section down, over the receiver nose, followed by the Block. Secure
the receiver in place with the two Nuts on top of the Block. Install the Pin
into the Clevis passing it between the barrel and grip mount. Tighten the Hand
Nut or use the Grip Mount Lever to pull the grip mount away from the barrel
approximately 5/32" or enough to slip the barrel wrench past the grip mount.
Loosen the barrel with the wrench. Remove the wrench. Once the barrel has been
loosened on the receiver, it should be removed by hand or with the aid of a
strap wrench.
Barrel Installation
Reverse the procedure.
