Compensator Wrench Instructions
General
Compensators are screwed onto the barrel with standard right hand threads. A pin
is fitted which prevents the compensator from turning and also holds the sight
blade in its dovetail in the compensator body. So, before the compensator or
sight blade can be removed, the pin must be driven out in the opposite direction
in which it was installed. Two basic types of compensators were fitted to TSMGs.
The early type which has a front portion diameter of approximately 15/16" which
I refer to as the smaller “S” style and the later type which has a front portion
diameter of approximately 1-1/32" which I refer to as the larger “L” type.
Therefore, the compensator wrench is available in the “S” and “L” sizes and are
so marked. The wrenches consist of the body, clamp and bolts. A handle made of
3/4" iron pipe x 18" is recommended but not included.
Setup
Fit the handle into the socket at the end of the body and secure it with the
setscrew in the body. Back off the two bolts in order to provide plenty of
clearance for the compensator front end to enter the side hole of the wrench.
Wrap the compensator front end with cardstock such as a business card. Pass it
through the wrench hole and tighten the bolts. The cardstock is important
because aluminum has a tendency to embed itself into the pores of steel which
will ruin the black steel surface of the compensator.
Removal
Unscrew the compensator in the normal fashion.
Installation
Prior to installing a compensator, be sure the barrel and compensator threads
are free of any burrs. The compensator can usually be threaded onto the barrel
without using a wrench.
